Onam Sadhya experience at Marriott, Bangalore

Recently visited Marriott to try my hands on the Onam Sadhya meal. The Onam Sadhya meal is a tradition in Kerela and is a must have if you’re looking to try something authentic during the Onam festival. We tried the Onam Sadhya meal at M-Café which is one of the most diverse restaurants at Marriott. The ambiance of M-Café is lively as it had citizens of every continent dinning with us. Located in Whitefield this luxury hotel is famous among business travelers across the globe.

The Onam Sadhya meal is elaborated with over 25+ vegetarian items and is served on a banana leaf to keep the tradition alive. We could also see people from around the globe enjoying this meal and we couldn’t wait to try our hands on it. To begin with the team at M-Café lights up the diyas and traditional drums at beaten to fill the air with fun and excitement.

As we made ourselves comfortable the banana leaves are laid over and slowly each of the items are placed on the leaf in a particular pattern. The first item is Salt, as it is a symbol of the different taste in store in the meal and is placed on the top left corner. The pickles then take on the top floor of the banana leaf. We tried the Ginger and jaggery pickle, Raw mango pickle, Beetroot pickle and a couple more. The variety of chips and other condiment is also quite extraordinary as we tried the Banana chips and the tapioca chips along with deep fried poppadum.

As the leaf started filling in with the Banana flower and Bengal gram dumpling, which tasted fantastic. The beans thoran or French beans toss with south green chilli chop and grated coconut and the Avail or Mixed vegetable cooked with coconut and yogurt are some of the common dish served in almost all sadya meals. For curries we had the Thakkali vattichathu or chopped tomato cooked south Indian spicy and the Varutha eriserry or the raw bananas and yam with coconut, black pepper, cumin curry and the Mampazha pulissery or Mango cooked coconut, cumin paste and yogurt. The meals are served with Sambar and Rasam. You can tried there curries and stews either with Kerela Brown rice or with Kerela Paratha.

The meal is incomplete with a Banana. But that’s not all for desserts as we had the Ada Payasam or rice cooked with milk, coconut and sugar. The payasam was to die for as it was simply amazing. Next we had the Rawa ladoo and the Coconut ladoo to end our meal.

The Onam Sadhya Meal is a journey in itself. The taste of each of the item was very different than what I have ever tried. This traditional meal is made only during the Onam festival, therefore cannot be missed.
