The best from Parsi Palate – SodaBottleOpenerWala

SodaBottleOpenerWala is one of the top destination if you are looking for Parsi food and Irani specialties. Located on Lavelle Road right across UB City, Bangalore / Bengaluru; the décor denoted the lost traditions of an Irani café. The walls are kept shabby to give a rustic look with posters from decades back gracing the entire experience. This outlet even has a railway track running through the top of your head. The seating can be divided into 2 parts one belonging to old Irani cafe and the other modern.

SodaBottleOpenerWala recently launched its new menu comprising of even more distinguishes dishes and drinks. The menu could not be more interesting and the name of the dishes are eccentric! Every item on the menu has a story behind it. We tried a couple of these drinks from the new menu like the Bombay Juley, Mauchi Chi and the Finding Fenny. The Bombay Juley was a rare drink made out of Anjeer with honey. The drink was decorated with mint and an orchid flower. Finding Fenny was made out of fenny with tonic spritzer with slices of Orange and Cucumber to enhance the flavors. The best was Maushi Chi with Pineapple juice in an extraordinary mix.

For appetizers we tried the Crispy Corn and Bhel, Kanda Bhajji, Aloo Aunty’s Cutlet, Babycorn Fry. The Crispy Corn and Bhel comes with green and chattpatta tamarind chutney. The taste was similar to a Bombay Bhel. The Kanda Bhajji are thin sliced onions tossed in spicy batter and then deep fried. Perfect table snack! The Aloo Aunty’s Vegetable Cutlet is a mixed vegetable aloo cutlet served with tamarind chutney. The deep fried Babycorn crispies were served with cheesy mayo sauce, a bit oily.

For the main course we tried the Brinjal and Drumstick Kari, Paneer Sanju Baba, Malai Paratha. The Brinjal and Drumstick Kari is a Parsi dish cooked with tomato coconut sesame gravy. The curry is a delicious creamy tomato dish and is served with rice. The Paneer Sanju Baba is a dish that cannot be missed. The onion gravy is cooked with whole spices along with saffron and topped with almonds. The succulent paneer cubes goes really well with Malai Paratha. The Malai Paratha is one of a kind bread and is so soft that it melts in the mouth. Must must try! It is one of the best combination of food that you could ever try and also the reason for my next visit to SBOW! On the other hand the Berry Pulao is what put SBOW on the map. The slightly flavored rice is topped with dried berries and dry fruits and is very different to any of the earlier pulao you might have tried.

At SodaBottleOpenerWala the desserts come from some of Parsi’s rich traditions. The Matunga Coffee Cake is a rich cake with filtered coffee and a whisky caramel sauce. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake has a thick peanut butter baked cheesecake surrounded by chocolate. The Cheesecake is a bit dry and therefore is quite a filling. The Lagan Nu Custard, is baked custard made up of eggs, milk and other spices and is basically eaten at Parsi weddings.
