Indian Food with a Twist – Salt

Bangalore lacks good quality Indian Food Restaurants for a long time, but the wait is over with Salt. Located on the 3rd floor of VR Bengaluru in Whitefield, Bangalore. Salt boasts of a complete Indian Menu but with a slight European Twist. The décor is clean with a European finish. Though you can sit inside the restaurant but try sitting outside if the weather is calm, which gives you a feeling of dinning on a sky deck.

Most of the items on the menu are from the Indian origin with an emphasis on the tandoor or grill items. The bar takes a significant space and creates some amazing drinks. The highlight of this restaurant is their staff which are very friendly and always ready to help. The cutlery are of high quality and as you begin you are served with a portion of finger chips along with in-house chutneys like the Pineapple chutney, the mint, the beetroot, the honey yogurt and the South Indian chutney. The experience takes you straight to your childhood.

We tried a couple of drinks like the Elaneer and the Raw Mango Mojito. The Elaneer was made with a subtle taste of lemon grass and topped with coconut water and fresh mint leaves. The Raw Mango Mojito was a twist given to Aam Panna with slices of raw mango, ginger and mint leaves. The Raw Mango Mojito was amazing in taste. We tried there drinks with the Roasted Paneer, Broccoli and Fruits Salad. The salad was made from Tandoor Grilled Paneer, Broccoli and fruits served with salad leaves and inhouse olive oil spice dressing. The salad was one of its kind and the use of micro herbs was excellent. To complement we had the Sorbet Gelato made from Pineapple and Passion fruit, the sorbet was sweet as well as sour.

The starters at Salt Restaurant are truly a creation of a masterchef i.e Chef Bala from flavors around the country. The Olive Masala Paniyaram was delicious as it was served with a tomato chutney, it was like a bite full of South Indian flavors. The Masala Arancini Balls was made with American Corn and cheese stuffed inside a Biryani rice ball and was served with honey yogurt dip on top. The chenna/paneer inside the ball was so refreshing in taste with the gentle taste of the biryani rice coating.

Next we had the Dahi Tawa Kebab made from hung yoghurt and cottage cheese and served with beetroot chutney on top. Again very flavorful and delicious, do try them! The Masala Spring Rolls were deep fried with spicy stuffing and was served with tamarind chutney. We finished off with the Fig Stuffed Paneer Tikka this charred grilled Cottage cheese cubes comes from the region of Rajasthan and were succulent.

For the main course we had the Malai Kofta Khorma which was served with Makhani Palao. The Malai Kofta khorma were made with cottage cheese and simmered in a rich tomato cashew gravy. The Makhani Pulao was one of its kind as it tasted like the Makhni sauce without the tomatoes, hats off to Chef Bala for this dish. We also tasted the Black Daal as it is a signature dish and was made by shimmering the daal for more than 24 hours. The rich taste cannot be forgotten. We tried them with Cheese Paratha and other House Spiced Breads, delicious!

The desserts at Salt are quite different than other places and we couldn’t wait to try them. The Elaneer Payasam was made with coconut milk and was not overly sweet, just perfect. Next we tried the Jamun Tiramisu made with pieces of Gulab Jamun stuffed inside the Tiramisu cake. The presentation of the dish was amazing.

Overall the experience at Salt was fantastic. Salt given you an experience of Indian food in a European setting with a world class staff and dishes from amazing a Chef.
