Breathtaking Flavors and Misty Windows at ‘Big Wong XL’

Big Wong is an iconic chain of restaurants when it comes to Oriental and Thai cuisines. The chain was started from Baani Sqaure in Gurgaon and currently also has an outlet in Galleria Market in Gurgaon and another one in Vasant Kunj. Big Wong XL was opened in Epicuria Mall, Nehru Place, Delhi only a few weeks back. This outlet is the largest among others and therefore the ‘XL’.

Went there on a rainy day and it felt as if I am on a misty hill station. The outlet has huge windows on the sides with lush green plants outside which allow a lot of natural light. The windows were dripping with condensed water. The place looked rustic with the brown wooden furniture and red brick walls. The atmosphere of the outlet was vibrant.

We tried the Mango Basil Mocktail, Strawberry Lime Mocktail and Spicy Guava. The Mango Basil was sweet and tangy at the same time. The flavor of the basil had a stimulating effect on the drink! The Strawberry Lime was a unique combination. The drink had crushed ice and salt on the rim which elevated the taste of the drink. The Spicy Guava drink had sweet guava juice with salt on the rim. As soon as you sip the drink you get a sweet taste of the Guava juice and after a while the green chilies has a tantalizing effect. The drink was a bit spicy for me.

The best partner for these drinks is the ‘Big Wong Special Cheese Wanton’. The crispy fried wantons had a cheese sauce inside; the taste was subtle and cheesy. The combination of crispy wafer and cheese sauce was dazzling. Next we tried the Veg Manchow Soup, which has a vegetable soup along with fried noodles. The soup was perfect for tranquillizing the taste buds. Had the Crispy Veg Thai Style as it had a water chestnuts, baby-corn and mushrooms. The exotic veggies are deep fried and then tossed with basil, garlic and red chili paste. The basil gave the dish its Thai twist. Overall great dish while sipping drinks.

Big Wong is famous for its Dimsums and we tried the Spicy Asparagus Dimsum, Crystal Veg Dimsum and the Veg Thai Herbs Dimsums. The Dimsums are served with a number of dips. The Spicy Asparagus has asparagus, mushrooms, lemon grass cooked with a bit of curry powder. The use of curry powder is rare but Big Wong does it flawlessly. Simply amazing! The Crystal Veg Dimsum was a combination of all the three peppers and mushrooms. The name crystal is from the use of translucent rice paper. The Veg Thai Herbs Dimsum is one of its kind as it was a mixture of pokchoi (Chinese Cabbage), water chestnut and mushrooms. The Dimsum is served with sweet chilli sauce topped with peanuts. The combination of the Dimsum with the sauce and peanuts is simply heaven! A must, must have!

Next we tried the Veg Sushi California Rolls. Not a great fan of Sushi as it gets slimy and chewy, but after having them at Big Wong, I simply love them now! Tried the Avocado Uramaki Sushi, Asparagus Tempura Roll and Big Wong Speical Veg Rolls. The Avocado Uramaki Sushi was topped with sticky rice and black sesame seeds. The taste was just out of the world. The rolls are topped with a bit of wasabi, pickled ginger and then dipped in soy sauce. The Asparagus Tempura roll had deep fried Asparagus in tempura form then rolled with sticky rice and black sesame seeds. Loved the crunchy asparagus and soft rice combination. The Big Wong Special Veg Rolls had a number of vegetables inside and topped with sticky rice with skin-peeled capsicum. Best sushi ever tried!

For the main course we had the Exotic Black Pepper Sauce with the Fried Rice with spring onions. The fried rice had a very subtle taste of spring onions and fresh black pepper. The rice was very light on stomach and went well with the Exotic Black Pepper Sauce gravy. The gravy had broccoli, mushrooms, celery and capsicums. The taste of black pepper is very evident in the gravy. Overall the fusion was great.

Well I always miss having desserts at Oriental restaurants. But at Big Wong we had the Chocolate Bomb with Vanilla Ice-cream and the Chocolate Caramel Bomb with Vanilla Ice-cream. Both the dishes had chocolate bar and caramel bar deep-fried and served with vanilla ice-cream respectively. The amalgamation of the bomb and ice-cream was quite distinctive in taste.
